Demons into Angels: Hiroshi Sugimoto's miniature fireworks

Hiroshi Sugimoto was distracted by the "fireworks in miniature" of static electricity that interferes with the process of meticulous darkroom produced in his studio in New York. But, he tells Mary Panzer, the source of his frustration became his new inspiration, after a visit to Lacock Abbey, once home of the father of photography, William Fox Talbot.

That additional printed and installed in large sets of panels on the wall of the gallery, or reproduced in ink on the pages of a book, Fields of lightning first, Hiroshi Sugimoto seems to be simply the record of natural phenomena A flash caught on film by a scientist, an old fashioned one that works with negative and paper. Except no flash of light you saw before ever produced richly detailed forms, some trees like spines stretched across a landscape burned, others taking the appearance of microscopic organisms, beaming with life.

His New York studio occupies half of a high floor in an old building in Chelsea warehouse, a wall, with many panes of glass, overlooking a panorama of the sky almost monochromatic windows, bricks and roofs. Inside, it's quiet, orderly and busy, Sugimoto office at one end, the dark room to another. In between, on the walls of large white prints are a bit excessive, familiar images of past projects, and selected tables are new job that he refuses to discuss.

This manufacturer of sensual photographs austere conceptual art tells good stories about his work, humorous, disarmingly frank. In one hour, it offers a tour of his darkroom and studio, and describes two interlocking projects, fields of lightning [1-6], and photogenic drawing [7-8]. They will be presented together at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art as part of the Edinburgh International Festival this summer.

He speaks with free associations and unpredictable a confident, self-taught thinker. The conversation started slowly but, like a roller coaster, peaks and speed in the turns that you never expected. Chat on the negatives, film, paper, and turns suddenly in the light of much larger issues. You thought you had settled on William Fox Talbot and the beginnings of photography, but rather tell you about the forces that contributed to the very beginning of life and time.
