Oil's not well: GPCB sends SOS to MoEF, alerts Coast Guard
The Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) has approached the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) for expert intervention as oil residues continue to wash up on the south Gujarat coastline though no oil spill or leakage has been detected in the immediate vicinity.
GPCB has taken the help of Indian Coast Guard and is also checking with authorities in neighbouring Maharashtra for any signs of oil spillage.
The oil residues that washed up in Navsari district two days ago have now been found on the beaches of Daman and Valsad. Authorities have warned locals against consuming seafood even as GPCB officials have ascertained the presence of hydrocarbons in the oil residues.
Anil Patel, GPCBs Regional Officer in Surat, said: The oil spill possibly occurred on the high seas and washed up on the shores forming small oil balls. Our teams and those from the Central Pollution Control Board have examined them. The incidence of oil deposition along the south Gujarat coast happens every year during the monsoon when there are high tides in the sea. We had sent out teams to oil exploration sites of ONGC and the NAICO well inlet, but found no leakages or abnormalities.
GPCB Member Secretary Hardik Shah said: A similar incident had taken place in 2009, wherein the needle of suspicion was raised on the Panna Mukta Basin and the Mumbai High basin. We have written two letters to the Union Ministry of Environment and Forest to look into the issue and find out the real culprits. We have also contacted the Coast Guard.
