PETERSBURG - More than 100 students out of a party back at school organized by the Sheriff Vanessa R. Crawford Petersburg and sponsored by numerous community organizations to provide supplies to students starting the school year off ready to succeed.
"Education is the key to success," said Mayor Brian Moore. "If you need further proof that this is a serious matter, look at all the work that was done to support this event."
The event was supported by Crossroads Church, Fort Lee, Petersburg Public Schools of the city, TRIAD, the souls of the Motorcycle Club Streets, Strong Sisters Motorcycle Club Numbers Petersburg Parks and Leisure Services, the Virginia State University Woo Woo, the Petersburg High School band, The Globe and Top Tent Rentals side.
Crawford said that this year is the third year it hosted the event, which is an effort to provide children with basic school supplies.
"It's part of my ongoing efforts to give back to the community," said Crawford.
She added that while part of his job as sheriff is to maintain the prison, she will not keep filling the prison.
"Are you ready to go back to school?" City Manager William E. Johnson III asked the crowd. A mixture of yes and our children excited to see their sad end of summer vacation was returned to his question. "We have good hopes for you all. We want you to go back and learn and have some fun."
The Rev. Kevin McBride of Crossroads Church, one of the major sponsors of the event, said he also wants to continue to support the community.Crawford said that McBride and his church regularly visit Pin Oaks and Pecan Acres housing projects in the city.
In addition to the backpacks of school supplies, event attendees were treated to food and activities as well as performances by the Woo Woo and Petersburg High School Marching Band.
